The highly anticipated “Star Wars: The Old Republic” MMO is rumored for for a Spring 2011 release. Exploring an era thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader, players will be on either side of a massive war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire. A player gets to chose their role and decide which side of the Force their path shall travel: light or dark. They will meet others along the way who may be companions or may be subversives. Players will also be allowed to create teams with their friends for battles and other challenges that shall come to pass.
No doubt a couple million Star Wars and MMO gameplay fans are anxious for its release. LucasArts and BioWare are rightfully optimistic about its impact. Why shouldn’t they be? The Star Trek Online MMO launched this week and crashed the servers as over one million Trekkies and MMO fans hopped online to captain their own starship. A little humility and realism may be line for LucasArts who bragged a year ago that this will be bigger than World of Warcraft. I believe it will be big, very big, but World of Warcraft has an undeniably diverse appeal to the masses. EA’s financially driven decision to push the release date back out of 2010 and into 2011 may quell the over-confidence of the delveopers, as it will be a game five years in development by the time it is released.
Hands-on testing of the game will commence in 2010. Those interested (i.e. ME) can sign up on the official site www.swtor.com.
